From the Pastor: December 8, 2003
We all like to give and receive gifts. The Retired Minister and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) is an opportunity to make a special gift, a way of saying “Thank you to a minister, missionaries and their widowed spouses for the many ways they have touched and even changed our lives. This is why I give to the offering and give thanks for it as well.
Probably I would not be serving as your interim pastor were it not for Pastor Elmer Palmer who regularly challenged us as young people to consider God’s call to Christian service. Many years later, while I was in seminary, Dr. Bill Goddard was my pastor and mentor. Almost every week, I realize my debt to him as a model in pastoral care. When I give as generously as possible to the RMMO, I appreciate the opportunity to express my gratitude for those two pastors especially.
As the widowed spouse of a pastor/chaplain who served Christ in and through our denomination, I have received thank-you checks from RMMO. The money once met a critical need, but it has always brought joy and thanksgiving to know that people in our congregations remember our ministries with thanksgiving and love.
Fifty-seven percent of the offering is distributed in the form of Thank You checks to over 3,000 recipients. Thank You checks are based solely on 15 or more years of ABC service. The remaining forty-three percent of the offering is available to meet emergency and other financial needs of retired American Baptist ministers and missionaries, or their widowed spouses.
I am now in my 3rd and final year serving on the Advisory Council for the RMMO. In that capacity, I have heard many amazing stories of the timely benefits when gifts have met urgent needs. So, I encourage you to give generously to this important offering. We who have been blessed by the ministry of God’s faithful servants have much to be thankful for. Please join me in saying, For Your Faithful Service, We Thank You.
Sincerely,
Pastor Harriet
