SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT PRAISE

When I awoke this morning, I was discouraged because it is the 4th Sunday I have not been able to attend church. In the mood I was in, I didn't really want to write this article. I decided to have my quiet time with the Lord at the same time as the worship service at Grace, worshipping with you in spirit even while separated by miles.

Asking God for a better attitude, I turned to today's Psalm (145th) in my devotional guide. The first thing I noticed as I read was the frequency of a grammatical change! In some verses, the Psalmist was talking to God; in others, he was talking about God. Okay, Harriet, it's time to stop and think about that. First thought was that I'd better be sure to pray before witnessing. But immediately, I knew I was only scratching the surface. This is essentially a Psalm of praise! Whether addressing God or speaking about God, praise simply spills over superlative adjectives and phrases - great, mighty, gracious, merciful, slow to anger, glorious, everlasting, righteous, holy. Add a few nouns - splendor, majesty, and wonders, glory - and the praise simply swells up. "Praise magnifies God - not as a microscope makes small things larger; but as a telescope brings far-off objects near and makes the invisible visible." ("A Catalog of Praise," Encounter with God, published by Scripture Union.)

Hoping to see you next Sunday,

      Pastor Harriet
