Thoughts from Pastor Dave: February 14, 2005 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” — Jesus (John 16.7) Why do I need the Holy Spirit? Jesus gives two definite answers to this question. First, I need the Holy Spirit to be empowered to live as Christ’s disciple. The New Testament is very clear that the Holy Spirit is the one who empowers us for godliness. Jesus’ ministry did not begin until after his baptism at which John testified that, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.” From that moment on, the Spirit becomes a guiding force in Jesus’ ministry. (See Matthew 4.1-11; Matthew 10.16-23; Matthew 12.15-32; Matthew 28.16-20; Luke 4.14-21; Luke 10.17-24; Luke 12.10-12.) After Jesus’ Easter resurrection he commanded his disciples to wait in the upper room in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them (Acts 1.8). That Pentecost experience changed those early disciples into fearless witnesses intent on sharing their story no matter what the consequences. Second, I need the Holy Spirit to be a part of God’s invasion force. Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father” (John 14.12). Jesus’ ministry was the beginning of God’s invasion of our world. Through Jesus’ ministry, the spiritual forces of darkness were confronted and demolished. However, we still live in enemy occupied territory until Christ returns. Through the power of the Holy Spirit in your life, God continues to take enemy ground. No longer does the enemy have to deal with one person full of the Holy Spirit, Christ, but he must deal with an army of those who are filled with the power of God. So remember Jesus’ words of encouragement—you will do greater works than these; but only with the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. For His Glory, Pastor Dave
