Grace Notes

Thoughts from Pastor Dave: September 26, 2005
Why is "Baptist" our middle name? (continued)

“So then …stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.” 2 Thessalonians 2.15

     (CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK)

The overarching principle of Baptist life is the authority of scripture. Baptist’s look to the Bible as the source of God’s revelation of Himself and His Mind to His disciples. We take our stand with other reformation thinkers who claim their authority directly from God’s word. As Menno Simmons wrote, “We certainly hope that no one of a rational mind will be so foolish a man as to deny that the whole Scriptures, both the Old and New Testament, were written for our instruction, admonition, and correction, and that they are the true scepter and rule by which the Lord’s kingdom, house, church, and congregation must be ruled and governed. Everything contrary to Scripture, therefore, whether it is doctrines, beliefs, sacraments, worship, or life, should be measured by this infallible rule and demolished by this just and divine scepter, and destroyed without any respect to persons.”

With this emphasis upon the Bible it is not surprising that Baptist life has emphasized the disciplines of Bible study and daily Bible reading for all of its members. It is this up close and personal encounter with God’s word that gives us strength for daily living. With this goal in mind, let me suggest a couple of suggestions for good daily Bible reading. First, find a Bible translation that you can understand. There are literally hundreds of English translations available. Find one that speaks to you and use it. Second, find a daily reading guide. The Bible is a large book put together over many centuries and can be confusing for first time users. So get a guide for the adventure. Grace purchases one called The Secret Place that is available on the baker’s rack in front of the sanctuary. It gives a daily reading as well as a devotional thought for the day. Grab one for $2 and get started with a great adventure in God’s great word.
