Grace Notes

Thoughts from Pastor Dave: January 02, 2006
Will You Help Me Preach?

Let me begin by saying thank you to the members of Grace Baptist Church. You generosity this Christmas truly made me and my family feel loved and cherished. Our Christmas bag from the church was overflowing with tokens of you love. Thank you.

Second, let me ask for your help. The story is told of a pastor who made a claim one day that the Bible had counsel for any human experience. In fact, he made the deal that if anyone from the congregation could "stump" him with a topic not covered by the Bible, he would take that person to dinner. In response to this challenge, one high school student slipped his topic in the suggestion box; it simply said, "Constipation." The next Sunday the pastor stood up and said that his scripture for the day would be, "And Moses took two tablets and headed out into the wilderness."

Although I am not quite as adamant as the preacher in this highly improbable story, I too believe that the Bible has significant things to say to Christians about all aspects of life. But as a pastor, I may not have the same experiences that many of you do. This difference in perspective can lead to my inability to see pressing issues of faith and discipleship for you, the congregation of Grace. Recognizing that limitation, I would like for you to help me with my preaching task by giving me suggestions of issues or topics that would be helpful for you in your walk with Christ.

Beginning Sunday, January 8th, there will be a box in the narthex where you may drop in your suggestions for issues or topics on which you would like to have biblical counsel. I will be collecting these suggestions through the month of January and then will use them to structure my sermons for the month of February. Just one caution: this is not a contest and there is no dinner prize as per the earlier story. However, if you are willing to share your real interests, I promise to give those concerns my best attention as we seek to be equipped to serve Christ together.

     See you Sunday,

  Pastor Dave
