Grace Notes

Thoughts from Pastor Dave: January 30, 2006
Who Needs to Study?

"All Scripture is inspired and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work." - 1 Timothy 3:16-17

Who needs to study? Shinichi Suzuki created a system for teaching children of all ages how to play stringed instruments. The heart of this world-wide teaching movement was stated in the motto that each child (no matter how young) learned during their first lessons. "I will practice to get better, or I will not practice and get worse: I will never stay the same." The Suzuki student needs to study.

Who needs to study? The professional football player spends a significant time each week of practice studying his opponent's films of their last few games. By this extensive film study, players can pick up tendencies of strategy, formations that are only used for certain plays, or individual player's patterns that might make the difference between being successful or not. The professional football player and coaching staff need to study.

Who needs to study? The disciple of Christ is challenged by the Master to, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me" (Matthew 11:29, emphasis mine). In fact, the very term "disciple" used in the New Testament comes from the Greek maqhthj, which means "learner", "pupil" or "apprentice." The life of a disciple is a life of learning those lessons deemed significant by the teacher, Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 3:16-17 indicates that learning from God’s written Word makes disciples proficient in spiritual matters so that we may be usable for God's purposes. The serious disciple of Jesus Christ needs to study.
